In March of 2015, Italian artist Rosa Barba presented The Color Out of Space, a meditative science-fiction film, crafted from images taken through the telescope at Rensselaer's Hirsch Observatory, and projected on the facade of the EMPAC building. That fall, the EMPAC-commissioned film figured as the centerpiece of a larger retrospective of Barba's work, considering geologic time as measured against the span of a human lifetime, at the MIT List Visual Arts Center. On October 2, a book chronicling the work's creation will be published in conjunction with EMPAC, MIT, and Dancing Foxes Press. Project curator Victoria Brooks contributes an essay.
